How to create pages with Copilot in SharePoint

Create pages with Copilot in SharePoint is finally here! The long-awaited feature has just arrived in SharePoint. You can now use it to quickly create a page from scratch or use documents as a data source, and Copilot will generate webparts with content, and event images. Let’s go and play with it!

Introduction

The feature was announced a long time ago but it’s finally available in the preview. It’s designed to speed up the page creation process in SharePoint which is a great idea 😊 Let’s be honest, content creation is not the simplest task. A new post for an event, a new policy, a new manual… it takes time to create a page, polish content, arrange webparts and images, etc. In many cases, the content is already prepared as a document or a presentation, so we need to copy that content and adjust it to a page/news format.

Using Copilot as an assistant in such a task could speed up the entire process. Now it is embedded in SharePoint as a native function. But it’s only available for users with an M365 Copilot license. So, how it works?

Create a page with Copilot

The feature is available as a Preview one and you can find it in the New drop-down menu on the main SharePoint site. Select the Page with Copilot and let’s get started.

There are 2 main options to create a page using Copilot. You can use predefined templates or create a prompt from scratch.

Let’s start with a template. When you choose one you will get a template similar to the one that you can select when you create a standard page (without Copilot). You will see the familiar design and a predefined prompt. You can modify only specific sections of the prompt. For example:

Create an event page for the event name, featuring sections regarding event details, resources, location, and FAQ.

In this prompt, you can modify only the event name, event details, resources, location, and FAQ. You can insert a lot of information in those sections, but you can’t extend or modify completely the prompt.

Create an event page for a company meeting, featuring sections regarding basic information, event plan, location and route details, and FAQ.

You can add a file to the prompt. You can add up to 5 different files which will be used as a source for the page. The first file is treated as a main document, the others are supported files. You can select a PDF, PowerPoint presentation, Word document, or even a Loop page! Copilot has access to your files and documents across Microsoft 365 services, so if you just enter a prompt with a document description it will also be discovered and used as a data source (or an email, a meeting recording, etc.). That’s cool.

If you want to create a prompt from scratch select the prompt section and describe what you want. The more detailed the better the page will be created. You can check the proposed prompts in the View prompts section. You can also select to of voice (default is Professional) and the length of the generated page  (default is Medium).

In this example, I want to create a page with FAQ for Brother HL3040 printers. I use this example because the document is complex and quite long.

The generation process takes some time. Usually, you will get a page within 30 seconds but keep in mind that if you add multiple complex files it will take more time. What will you get:

  • Copilot will create a title for a page.
  • Copilot will generate content and divide it into sections. Each section is a separate webpart.
  • Copilot will add images or graphics to make it beautiful 😊

Copilot generates a page step by step (or webpart by webpart). I like watching the process because it looks as if an extremely skilled editor is creating the page. Of course, it’s fun to watch it for the first time and it can be boring quite fast. You can check out the output in the screenshot below.

When it’s created you can modify each webpart, add additional information, use Design ideas, rewrite sections using Copilot, and so on. Page with Copilot is just a wizard powered by Copilot 😊

Summary

I played with the Page with Copilot for a few hours and it was really great. I do like it. It requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license so if you don’t have it you must do the math and calculate costs vs features. If you or your users create a lot of pages or news for your Intranet then it will pay off. If you have the license already you can just start using it.

I work with many large customers and they will love it. For them, it will be a huge time saver. Just imagine that an editor must create 20 pages a month. Manually it’s 20 hours, but with Copilot it will take 4 or 5 hours. Based on my experience, savings can be even higher with more complex pages.

But keep in mind that it will not replace editors! The editor must check the content, fix issues, modify the design, etc. Someone must keep an eye on the quality. Do not skip the quality check.

The feature has started rolling out to Targeted Release and will continue to roll out to all tenants through the end of April 2025. Microsoft is planning to implement more functions into this one. For example:

  • Page Builder – This allows you to reorder, add, or remove sections before generating the page, similar to PowerPoint’s narrative builder.
  • RTE webpart with Copilot – Customize or compose each section with prompts and reference documents.
  • File upload support – Essential for creating pages for different teams or clients.
  • Custom templates support.
  • And others

I would like to get some automation functions. It would be awesome to create a Flow (Power Automate) that creates a page based on an uploaded document to a specific folder. It would open more advanced and enterprise scenarios. In general, all Copilots in M365 require this kind of extension.
